{Guest Series} The Best of Me-Southern Lovely

Welcome to the final Best of Me series guest!

Hello lovely friends of Vintage Gwen. I am excited to be here today!
Since I consider Jennifer a dear friend of mine, it is wonderful to be in her space today!

I'm Lindsay, from Southern Lovely. Over at my place you will find all sorts of DIY's, sewing, painting & lots of hot glue projects. It's kind of a little of this & that. :) I have a great time creating it all though.

When Jennifer explained her 'Best of Me' series, I had to think what I wanted to talk about. Then it hit me, as far as projects go, my favorite is our loft area. It's a place in our home where I go to breath & relax. I love this space, it definitely makes me happy.

It wasn't always like this though. We gave it a big makeover several months ago.

Moving Update...

February Birchbox

Happy Friday lovelies!

I was sweating over my February Birchbox! I changed my address to our new house and come to find out the address was wrong! Even though we haven't moved yet I've been checking the mailbox and it finally came yesterday! A few days after normal time...whew! Thanks post person!!

From Twitter I had an idea what would be in the box and I'm excited to try out the goodies!

This month's goodies...Beautyblender sponge, Eye Rock Designer liner, Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint, Mineralogie Ultimate Cream Concealer. Lifestyle Extras are Chuao Chocolatier Spicy Maya ChocoPod and a music download. How fun!

I've never mastered fancy eyeliner techniques so these stickers look fun!

Thinking I'll have to pair this with a red lip!

I did eat the chocolate {of course!} and oh my! The package states "Unusual, Unexpected & Delicious"...all very true!! It's just the right amount of spiciness!

Hello! My name is Betsy from Romance on a Dime. I'm SO excited to be guest posting for Vintage Gwen! The "Best of Me" series has definitely been so inspiring to read and I'm really glad to be a part of it. Thanks for having me Jennifer!!

I blog about all sorts of stuff, such as thrifty living, menu planning, budget/DIY decorating, and organizing and simplifying life. I still consider myself a newlywed (1 1/2 years into marriage). A couple of my most popular series are 31 Days of New Uses for Old Things, Take it on Tuesday blog hop, and Cutting your Grocery Bill 101.

Awhile ago, I shared my best projects of 2011, but what I'm going to share today is a more recent post that quickly climbed the ladder of most page views. It's currently the fourth most viewed post on Romance on Dime!

Ready for free printables and a tutorial on How-to put together your own Home Management Binder?

DIY Home Management Binder/Planner

I spent a lot of time looking through all the ideas for printable planners, home binders, lists, and daily to do sheets I could find. I did go back and forth about whether I wanted a planner that fit into my purse or not (last year my planner did). I finally decided to make my own planner using a 3-ring binder and several printables I found. Here are some of my favorite printables:

Week at a Glance from Mommy Tracked (I LOVE the color and the scalloped edges!!):

Daily Planner Printables from Desiring Virtue - I LOVE these daily pages! Each day of the week has a different main task: Mon. - Laundry, Tues. - Kitchen, Wed. - Office, Thurs. - Town, Fri. - Cleaning, Sat. - Outdoors, Sun. - Lord's Day/day of rest. What is great is now they have blank daily sheets!!

Daily Docket from Simple Mom - this one I actually scanned in and spent HOURS editing and changing sections to be able to print it on a smaller sheet. Then, I decided to save it for another year and use the above daily planner.

Perpetual Birthday Calendar from The Project Girl

Money Saving Mom also has lots more printables to choose from! The one I'm definitely adding to my home management binder is her 2-hour House Cleaning Checklist.

I'm also a big fan of FlyLady and her beginner baby steps towards keeping an orderly, clean home. In the process of going through her fly lessons, I put together my own control journal resource sheet, which lists my morning routine, bedtime routine, and the cleaning zones I've mapped out in my home:

At first I had the idea to laminate the daily planner sheets and write on them with dry erase markers (so I wouldn't have to print a million pages). Since I don't have a laminator, I checked into the cost of a local copy place - $2/page - NO WAY!! I decided to instead put my daily planner sheets inside a sleeve and write on it with dry erase markers. It works really well!!

Happy Valentine's Day and....

Happy Valentine’s Day lovelies!

And guess what else is today?

It’s my 1 year blog anniversary!!

What a great day to have your blog anniversary on huh?

{I didn’t plan it that way! But at least I won’t forget the day!}

Boy I can’t believe it’s been a year! A fun one too!

I’ve been so blessed to meet some very lovely people and can’t wait to meet more!

Looking back I really had no clue about blogging but just knew it looked fun and appealed to my creative side and I wanted in on the fun.

At times it’s challenging but I’m learning and that makes it worth it.

Thank you to each and every one of you!

This wouldn’t be as fun without you!

I of course want to celebrate this moment with a giveaway!!

But alas! We are still trying to get moved!

So when things are settled we will celebrate! So stay tuned!

Vintage Gwen Chapel-A New Image of Jesus

I recently heard a Christian comedian talk about this scene in the Bible…

“And they were bringing unto him little children, that he should touch them: and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me; forbid them not; for to such belongeth the kingdom of God.” Mark 10:13, 14 ASV

He said that due to most artists this scene is depicted as Jesus sitting with children around him, maybe one in His lap…the children behaving, nice and clean. But according to the comedian this isn’t so. It is his opinion that the children were dirty and climbing all over Jesus.

I think I agree!

I thought about Lil’ Hunkie and our normal day to day routine. When he’s in play mode, we usually have several moments of wrestling and tickling and him climbing all over me or his daddy. The image of Jesus playing with children like we play with Lil’ Hunkie makes me smile, does my heart good. I know Jesus to be relatable. And this new image of Jesus and the little children makes Him even more so.

Thank you Mr. Comedian!

And thank you Lord for loving your children and enjoying them, rather they are clean, prim and proper or dirty, and wanting to play!

{Guest Series} The Best of Me-A Little Slice of Special

Welcome to today's Best of Me guest!

I'm excited that today's post is about makeup! I love makeup and thought this would be perfect since Valentine's Day is around the corner...so take a tip or two and spice it up this year!

Well hey there- my name is Lori and I blog over at A Little Slice of Special.

Jennifer asked me to write up a guest post and I right away suggested I write up a best of post on beauty... I was so happy to hear that was what Jennifer was hoping I would do!

Now, you might be wondering, why should I be writing anything about beauty? Well, I am by no means a professional, I haven't had any training, and I've never even read a book about makeup techniques (when it comes to makeup I'm a magazine, blog, and pinterest kinda gal!). All I do know is I love playing with makeup. I have since I was about 13. I've always had a daily makeup routine and been willing to try new products and trends.

Ok, back to the best of. Since before I committed my blog to being a structured beauty and style blog about 8 months ago I would often write up posts and share pictures about fun new products I got or a look I tried to copy or create. About 10 months ago my best friend asked me for a makeup tutorial from the most basic steps, everyday methods, and then super funtastic out there eye makeup.

Eventually this turned into a 10 part tutorial series and since then I've been doing lots of eye tutorials...but first...the basics.

I'd love to do more specific tutorials about makeup tips and tricks in general but I need some requests to inspire me (hint hint wink wink!) Just a few weeks ago, I committed to Makeup Monday, and I'd love to feature some general tutorials amongst my unending need to play with eye makeup and lipstick! Because I wanted to create something new and special to be posted on Vintage Gwen I decided to tackle two of the trickiest eye makeup looks. The smokey eye and the cat eye...both of which are perfect for that Valentines Day Date (and in my case-whenever the heck I feel like it!)

The first step is to prep your lids, this holds true for both options, I like to add concealer or a really creamy foundation to my entire lid, another option is primer, feel free to use both! Then I like to dust a thick layer of translucent loose powder below my eye (this will catch any dark debris while doing your eye makeup and can easily be brushed away when you're done! When doing a cat eye it's best to stick to a neutral shadow palate. Sometimes I wear a single neutral color but for a little extra drama I chose to do a very light 3 color neutral eye. To take some of the matching guess work out I'm a big fan of the maybelline 3 color shadow sets. I apply the lightest shade from lashes to brow, the second darkest color to just my lid, and the darkest in the crease.

When you're happy with your line just add several coats of black mascara. I love the drama of black but it's absolutely legit to use a brown shades of liner and mascara! Now all you have to do is finish your look with a lip product of choice...

And now for the smokey eye...

Simply wanted to share one of my all time favorite worship songs today. It's been over a year ago, one night I was having trouble falling asleep, Hunkie was at work and I grabbed my Ipod and brought up Gateway Worship's album, Wake Up The World. I hadn't listened much to it yet and scanned the songs and landed on "When I Speak Your Name" and fell in love and just listened to it over and over and cried some worship tears. And went sleep.

Chic Couture-Red Lips For My Valentine

If you're like me, you do not wear red lipstick regularly. Maybe not even at all. I've found myself in a pale lipstick rut and have seen a few of my blogging buddies rockin' a red lip lately. So what better time then Valentine's Day to branch out and have some fun!

Here's some choices I'm thinking about...

The trick is finding one that is blue based. According to makeup artist Carmindy this is how to determine what's good for your skin tone..."Fair-skinned women should look for shades with blue undertones, like cherry. Medium-skinned women should look for true reds -- apple or fire engine. Darker-skinned women should look for darker "blood-red" shades like garnet or sangria."

Blue based choices are also great at making your teeth look white.

Since preparing this post I purchased the Maybelline Red Revolution and on my first day of wearing it got 2 compliments! I should have tried this out much sooner!! And fyi Natalia is wearing Very Cherry by Maybelline in her video which I almost purchased. Think I will as it seems red to me and the Red Revolution is almost a hot pink.

Have you been upcycling..? I have.. I've been trying to find ways to kill that

annoying sensation of throwing things out or simply recycling when I can "Upcycle"

into better trinkets and goodies to jazz up the house.. Well, I've been up to just that lately
and it's been really awesome creating fun and creative touches to add to our home. What do
you think..? These bottles are actually champagne and wine bottles I upcycled to add
festive fall touches to my bedroom dresser!!❤ Wanna Create Your Own..?
Here's how below.. So easy, stylish and GREEN!!

*Glue Gun
*Driftwood - YES! I LOVE Driftwood!!
{Go out back and grab LOTS of funky driftwood!}
*Some ❤ Krylon {White Krylon Spray Paint}
{flower if you prefer, these where left over from a party}
*How To*
To begin, I simply spray painted the bottles I had for use. Spray paint white until
you have a satisfactory texture. I used two coats. After drying, I gathered up some
driftwood from the back yard. I tried to collect some funky dried ones with little
branches and character. Once you have the driftwood you need, simply glue on
the wood in a creative form to get the look you want. {Yes, it's really that simple!}.

After gluing on my driftwood, I wanted to add a hint of girlish feel to the bottles. so I
grabbed an off white flower and some dried babies breath to add some clean and classic
look to my bottles. Use a bit of glue to place the flowers where you will like them
to go along with the flow of your now upcycled driftwood bottles! TADAA!
SO D A R L I N G ..I {Heart} ❤ Them!!

I came up with this idea on a wimp trying to figure out what to do with ALL
the bottles we have piled up! The is SO much to do with a little bit of nature and
what you might consider "trash" around your home. Before you dump anything
out, take a second and think of creative ways to go green by Upcyling in style!!
Really hope you enjoyed my simple and fun tutorial here today! These beauties
are now on my dresser and look so stylish! I tend to think I could really see these
featured in a Pottery Barn magazine..:))~ RE-CREATE Always!!

Vintage Gwen Chapel-Prayer For The Home

So I've been thinking about my new house a lot. Surprised? I'm just so excited because technically it's my first purchase. I can't wait to make it a home. Not just 4 walls but a safe, peaceful, place of comfort for not just us 3 but for all who enter. I looked in my Prayers That Avail Much book and found this awesome prayer to share. Father, I thank You that You have blessed me with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus.

Through skillful and godly wisdom is my house (my life, my home, my family) built, and by understanding it is established on a sound and good foundation. And by knowledge shall the chambers (of its every area) be filled with all precious and pleasant riches-great priceless treasure. The house of the uncompromisingly righteous shall stand. {Guest Series} The Best of Me-Feeding My Temple

Let's face it, we all love Italian food. But we all know it can sometimes be very high in calories, fat, and carbs. I have a great go to recipe for Parmesan Chicken that is a regular in our dinner rotation. I promise the small amount of prep work is worth it!

Skinny Chicken Parmesan

adapted from both Skinny Taste and The Girl Who Ate Everything

serves 4 (one chicken breast each, 225 calories)

2 (8 oz) chicken breasts, sliced in half (horizontally, or butterflied but cut all the way through. You will end up with 4 pieces of chicken)

3/4 cup seasoned breadcrumbs

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon Italian seasonings (I don't necessarily like a lot of Italian seasoning, so add more if you like it!)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (This does not have to be fresh. In fact a use the stuff in the green bottle more times than not)

1 1/2-2 tbsp butter, melted

3/4 cup reduced fat mozzarella cheese

1 cup marinara or your favorite spaghetti sauce

cooking spray

Preheat oven to 450°. Line large baking sheet with foil (easy clean up) and spray lightly with cooking spray.

Combine breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and Italian seasonings in a bowl. Melt the butter in the microwave in another bowl (this is usually melted after about 20 seconds, so watch it closely.) Lightly brush the butter onto the chicken, then dip into breadcrumb/cheese mixture. Place on baking sheet and repeat with the remaining 3 pieces of chicken.

Lightly spray a little more cooking spray on top (this makes it nice and crispy) and bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Remove chicken from oven and turn over. Spoon sauce over each piece and top with mozzarella cheese and bake another 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.

I like to serve this on a bed of whole grain spaghetti tossed in additional spaghetti sauce. You can also enjoy it with a side salad or veggies.

Making It Official...We're Moving!

I contemplated about writing this post since I don't have any pictures but time is ticking and I wanted you lovelies to know what was going on!

I've mentioned a few times that we are finally selling our house after 15 months of it being on the market!!

The buyer wants in as soon as possible. So we thought we'd rent for a little bit and not be in a rush to find something to buy. We've looked on and off over the last 15 months and just couldn't find what we really wanted. Which basically is a little bit of land and a bigger house. Either the properties we were finding were out of our price range or the houses desperately needed to be updated.

Well I'm happy to report that we, by Divine Providence, found a house to buy.

{God is so good!}

Honestly at first I wasn't excited....there's some cons and I was trying to figure out in my mind how to overcome them before I was to the excited point that I'm at now. But God had me make a Pros/Cons list and He brought to my memory some things I had forgotten that I wanted in a house.

Pros: 14 Cons: 2

{Some of the cons we'll work on immediately...the ones under the line. ☺}

Did ya catch that? I get a crafting space!! Whoopee!!

Just a little about the house...

It's a 2022 square foot house built in 1975 that's been completely redone on the inside. It's on 5.27 acres!

And it's 10 minutes from our church and only 15-20 minutes from plenty of shopping! I'm having to sacrifice closet space and a full bath in the master bath (it's 3/4 bath). It worked out that I'm getting a pantry and island made for the kitchen!

Everything is just falling into place.

And our payment is going to be less then we are paying for an 1200 square foot house!!

I. Am. Excited!

So I said all that to say this...posts may be fewer the next month or so until we get settled.

Vintage Gwen Chapel-Worry Is Irrelevant

I recently saw a church sign that said

"Worry is irrelevant. God is Provider."

How very true!

A simple definition of irrelevant is "not connected with". Worry and God are not and won't ever be connected. Worry doesn't move God. At. All. In fact, doesn't it just prolong things?

One of God's many names is Provider. It's what He does and worry won't ever change the fact that He willingly, happily provides for His children.

So why do it?

The bible says that worrying doesn't even "add a single hour" to our life.

Knowing and believing all this I still worry. It's a constant part of life to overcome worry. In some situations I easily overcome it...others I have to constantly remind myself who God is and the provisions that He already has made for me.

How do you handle worry?

January Birchbox

I can't believe it has been a month already since signing up for Birchbox!

I know I only have 2 under my belt but this box is my favorite so far!

I'm loving the Birchbox magnet, Juicy Couture fragrance and especially the Zoya nail polish!!

Here's the polish in action!

Isn't it a nice neutral? This is my first time using this brand and I was pleased that I could have gotten away with just one coat. But since my hands are in water a lot I went ahead and did 2 coats. I'm loving it!

Oh and the granola was pretty tasty! I haven't used the cream or serum yet, I'm a Mary Kay user, have been for years so the creams and serums will be a little hard for me to be eager to try, if ya know what I mean.

My name is Lauren and I will be guest posting today, which I could not be more excited about!

Isn't this such a lovely little space Jennifer has going?! :) Thanks for having me Jennifer!

I blog over at Summit St Joy about all sorts of stuff, like budget decorating, thrifty living, and frugal crafting, but mostly I write about our journey to making our new house into a cozy home. Lots of love, laughter, and budget decorating fills our walls! I hope you'll stop by from time to time and check in on my thrifty finds, crafty projects, and freebie printables. Oh, and every Friday I post my Fave{5} on Friday, so check that out too! :)

Ok, now on to the good stuff!

Today I'll be sharing one of my top tips for budget decorating and a little example of how I use it.

Really, we have next to nothing to spend on decor in our house, so I love to thrift and make all sorts of decor out anything I can find for free or cheap.

Here's one budget decorating tip that's taken me a long way.

You ready for it?

Use Paper

Yes, that's it. That's my big tip!

Pretty scrapbook paper is cheap (watch for it at yard sales or on craigslist so you don't pay full retail for the fancy pages), and if you're using your scraps, they're essentially free!

Pretty papers are an easy, inexpensive way you can make a big impact with little or no budget.

Here are some pretty Valentine paper projects floating around blogland these days:

And now I'd like to share a super easy little paper craft with you.

{PAPER HEART GARLAND}

Here's the complete supply list:

:::SUPPLIES:::

- 1 sheet of double sided scrapbook paper

- scissors (or, if you have a Cricut, go for it!)

- ribbon

- grapevine or wood wreath form

- hot glue

I used a Cricut die cutting machine for mine {you can read about that budget purchase here}, but you can easily cut out little hearts and get the exact effect.

Simply cut (or Cricut) your hearts out. Use as few or as many as you like!

Attach to a piece of string or ribbon using hot glue or other adhesive.

And that's IT!

In no time you've made a pretty piece of paper heart garland.

You can hang your garland any which way you choose.

Or try wrapping it around a grapevine wreath for easy peasy front door decor:

- scrap ribbon $0

- scrap scrapbook paper $0

- wreath $1 (dollar store)

So there ya have yourself some lovely, easy, and most importantly BUDGET Valentine's Day decor.

Soiree Day-50th Wedding Anniversary

Today's soiree is a very special one. One of my best friends gave her fabulous parents a surprise 50th Wedding Anniversary party 2 weeks ago and I had the pleasure and honor in helping! The celebration was held at one of the fairly new hospitals in the area...they have an Education Center that has a terrific space for parties, meetings and such.

There was a place to hang a picture of the couple already so I took full advantage of that!. My friend had purchased the amazing stars from Pier 1 a year ago! The candle holder I just happened to find at Kirkland's on sale for $13!! We used 2! And I made the sign-in sign with papers my friend got at Hobby Lobby.☺

I arranged the photos while my friend put all 7 stars together!

The flower arrangements were provided as part of the room rental. I believe my friend added the candles and just simply scattered sepia tone photos of the couple on each table. Simple and fun!

Bride and Groom figurine is a family heirloom!

Money saving tip: do a small special cake for the couple and then do a simple sheet cake to feed guests.

So glad I got this shot! These are extremely wonderful people! Very down to earth, hard working, love the Lord good people. What an awesome example of love and devotion!

They were happily surprised and the evening was lovely.

My friend did a fabulous job planning!

Most every night. My husband works 2 nights a week so not on those nights. Usually our eating out is on grocery shopping days, we'll get lunch and then lunch after church on Sundays.

Modern praise and worship, contemporary Christian. Occasionally, Johnny Cash, John Fogerty or ZZ Top, that's when my husband is watching a dvd or rocking their tunes out on the guitar.

5. Do you have any pets?

Not right now. I see a puppy in my future though!

6. What is your favorite thing to do at the beach?

Since I can't swim it would be to splash around and then soak in some rays!

Neither although I like to dance!

Vintage Gwen Chapel-Scripture Spotlight

And He said to them, “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."

I mentioned this past week that I've joined my church in our annual beginning of the year 21 day fast. I believe in fasting because I believe Jesus tells us to do so. Have a mountain in your way? The answer?

Faith plus prayer plus fasting.

I see fasting as a way to tell God I'm serious about moving a mountain.

Making a goal poster and fasting are how I like to start the year off.

I'm thankful and give all glory to God that my beginning of year refocusing has produced results.

Chic Couture-I ♥ Urban Decay

A couple weeks ago I shared that I had bought Urban Decay's Naked 2 palette with some of my Christmas Cash. Well I've had it for about a week now and I'm loving it! Actually I ♥ all of the Urban Decay I have!

It all started with the Primer Potion. I was having horrible trouble with my eye makeup creasing by the afternoon and thought I'd give the potion a try....it does the job! Now I have tried others...including a MAC paint pot...and none worked as well as the Urban Decay. I think it's because my eyelids can be a little oily at times thus the creasing. Now if I have a real good cry then my eye makeup does mess up but hey water was involved!

Then I heard rave reviews about the Naked palette and splurged and wasn't disappointed. Then grabbed some more playful, smaller palettes at some good prices and finally the Naked 2. So I'm not quite a junky yet but enjoy the quality of the shadows so I might be on my way. It's definitely a way I pamper myself!

My collection... that larger tube (the 'professional' size) of UDPP has lasted a year!!

(Naked 2 is at top.) The Naked 2 came with a double ended brush and it's awesome too!

I love Woodstock(the hot pink)! It looks like it'd be wowza! but it's not! It's a pretty pink! ☺

Naked 2 and Naked. I put stars on my favs in the Naked 2...Chopper, Snakebite, and Pistol. I love Pistol too! It's a metallic green and goes good with my brown eyes!

Yes some of the colors are repeated but I've tried to make the repeats to a minimum as best as possible!

I'm sorry I have no looks to show you, I basically wanted to share one of my fav beauty products today.

Hi everyone! I'm Shannah from Just Us Four

I am so excited to be here as a guest poster on Vintage Gwen! Jennifer's "Best of Me" series is definitely going to be fun and inspiring so I am really glad to be a part of it.Today, I'm sharing with you one of my favorite projects from 2011. It didn't quite make it into my Top 5 projects based on page views last year but I definitely consider it some of my best work!
We moved into our new home back in spring of 2010. Moving from a much smaller townhouse into a large-ish single family home definitely brought some furniture challenges. Determined to still have the great guest room I imagined in my mind without breaking my budget, I set out to make my own headboard. Today, I'm excited to share the project with you! So, let's get started!
My supply list:
62" x 24" Sheet of plywood (we used chip board and had the HD people cut it)
2 x 4 cut into two 3' pieces
Batting or foam (I did double layer batting)
Fabric of choice
Staple gun + Staples
Drill
Screwdriver
Wood Screws (2")
Extras (nail heads, cording, etc.)
Ready to Build?
I have been doing most of my projects in our (unfinished) basement and this one was no different. Down in the lair, I put down a blanket and sheet on the floor to keep my fabric clean. Then, I layered the fabric, batting and wood as I would be attaching it.I wrapped the batting around and stapled it. I did two ends and then the other two sides. A note here: While I recommend double layer batting if you go that route (it was cheaper than foam in my case), I do not recommend wrapping both layers around. It really interferes with the leg attachment. Just my $.02.I spaced my staples pretty far apart just to get it secured and then went back to add additional staples. Once I had the batting secure, it was time to do the fabric portion. My fabric was actually a curtain I picked up at Bed, Bath and Beyond. It matches the curtains that are already in the room but with a price tag of $24.98! Subtract my 20% coupon and then my $17 merchandise credit and it was practically free.I cut a lot of the fabric off but using the clearance curtain even though it was much longer in length than I needed saved me so much money. Staple, staple, staple.The corners (as always) were a little tricky but I managed to get them all stapled down so that they looked uniform (from the front at least!).She's looking pretty good but needs a little something else.Enter a little bling...nail head bling that is.I picked up the nail head trim at Joann's with my 50% off coupon. It was so much easier and faster than doing real nail heads. Just hammer in every 5th nail.Next up, legs! This is where Mathlete (a.k.a. my husband) came in. Armed with his tools, we set to attaching the legs.He pre-drilled holes into each 2 x 4 x 3 where the wood screws would go.Then, we positioned it on the back of the headboard and screwed it in. We had pre-measured the distance from the floor to the top of the mattress, how far we wanted it to overlap and the distance between the attachment locations on our existing frame. Using those measurements, we knew where to attach the legs.We ran into a little problem because of all the batting (see above re: my batting recs) so I had to unstaple some portions and cut out the layers of batting. Then, we were able to attach the legs securely. I used the extra fabric to cover the legs so they matched and blended well. Just a few more staples to secure that.
Upstairs we went where the headboard was connected to our existing metal bed frame. Voila! New bed for the guests! Lessons Learned:
1) Pay a little extra and go for the foam. Then, cut it to the exact measurements of your board so there is no wrap around issue like I had with my batting.
2) If you go cheap like me and go for batting, don't wrap both layers around. The layers are great for the front but totally unnecessary for the backside. Headboards don't need junk in their trunk.
3) Use 1/2" staples. You'll thank me.
4) Nail head trim kits are you friend!
5) Have extra screws on hand. We had at least 3 break during our leg attachment.
Budget Breakdown:
Plywood (cut for free): $7.17
2x4x8 (cut for free): $2.47
Wood Screws: $2.30
Batting: $15.67 (1/2 off with coupon)
Fabric: $2.66 ($19.98 - $17.32 merchandise credit)
Nail head trim: $10.04 (1/2 off with coupon)
Total cost: $40.31

We are gearing up for a basement renovation (i.e. unfinished to finished!) which is sure to be filled with lots of DIY projects so I hope you will come visit!

I'm excited to share a cute boy party today! This cute shindig from Kim at Too Much Time On My Hands has some unique details that caught my eye!

Kim used vintage travel themed scrapbook paper for the banner and used a metal tray for a chalkboard arrival/departure sign....so clever!

Vintage Gwen Chapel-2012 Virtual Goal Poster

Several years ago I believe God dropped it in my sister's mind to make a Vision Poster. This Vision Poster was simply a piece of construction paper with goals that she envisioned completing...many if not all with God's help. She'd cut out pictures from magazines and write beside them the goal and space to right in the date completed. One year I snuck a picture of a ruggedly handsome guy onto her poster and wrote "Husband for Jennifer" beside it! ☺ She left it on but told me to get my own poster! And so I eventually did and so did our women's group at church. For several years we've used our first meeting of the year to make our posters. Now I think it's something we all do on our own. Last year I didn't make one...I only had about 3, pretty major things I'd be putting on it. Sell our house; get a new to us, with land, bigger house; and get pregnant one more time. Well my sister and I got to the meeting to make our posters but had to leave for a small family emergency which turned out alright. So I just didn't ever get around to making it. And guess what? None of that stuff happened.

"I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry."

I'm a firm believer in writing goals, visions, plans down and to keep them in front of you. Obviously I'm not always good at it but God instructs us to 'write the vision'. It's like it sets things in motion when you do.

And I believe in writing the vision in our hearts first. Which I have done already this year. Our church always does a 21 day fast to start the year off to get the mind of Christ in all areas...life, church, family, job, etc. I had already determined in my heart that because we had some pretty major things that I'd be putting on my poster that I was going to not only participate in the fast but take it more serious than ever. And do you know that before I could make my poster God has already moved!!

Do you see it? We got an offer on our house last Tuesday!! Our house has been on the market for about 15 months! Thank you Lord! And I thought we'd be renting so as to not be in a rush to find something but God's moving on that goal too. It's too soon to say anything at this very moment but sometimes things just fall in place and looks like that might be happening! I'm excited!

I'm thankful that God knows what He is doing!

One more thing about the fast, which starts tomorrow...I've decided to fast social media! I'm not as addicted, per say, as I once was(yes I had a farm!) but I find they take up a lot of time. So for 21 days I will be absent from Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Pretty sure the world will keep turning.

I'll talk more about fasting in the coming weeks hopefully. I may not be posting as much for the next month, month and half due to moving! Yay! But have been preparing some guests for you all and Show & Share will continue so don't forget to link up!

I wrestled with doing a "Best Of" post like most everyone else because it hasn't quite been a full year that I've been blogging. But I checked my top posts this week and was surprised to find it had changed a little! And you know why? Because of Pinterest!! Yep! What does 2012 hold for Vintage Gwen?

Honestly I don't know! I feel like I'm still new at this! I do know that I want Vintage Gwen to be a great read, full of inspiration both creatively and devotionally. And I want to find some balance as a blogger. When getting started I didn't realize how much time and work it takes. Yes, I'm confessing...I spend way too much time on the computer! I'm working on overcoming the 'but I want it all' way of thinking by remembering why I started in the first place....simply to share me. I didn't start to be the next Jen of Tatertots & Jello(who is fabulous!) or to make a load of money. I'm enjoying the community and the friendships far more then I would ever enjoy being famous or having money in my pocket.

When I get the balance thing figured out I'll be sure and tell ya!

And now I must remove myself from the computer!

Today's post was inspired by my calendar habit I have. I have to have at least one that I write important dates, events, etc. on and have it located centrally ...in the kitchen. Yesterday I went through 2011's calendar and prepared 2012's. Within the birthdays and anniversaries are some milestones....a friend's baby girl turning one, a friend's parents celebrating 50 years of marriage and my in laws, who will be married 40 years in December.

All excellent reasons to plan a soiree!!

This handmade market has tons of shops that offer printable party supplies. You can also search for any props you might be looking for. For example, I wanted a vintage truck for Lil' Hunkie's 1st Birthday. Also, if you're wanting a special birthday outfit for a child's party custom orders can usually be made.

The Perfect Palette

Yes The Perfect Palette is a wedding themed site but so? Color plays a big part in theme! And is a great place to start the planning process. I love that you can search by color and even request a palette!

Searching Pinterest will no doubt lead to more great party planners and awesome do it yourselfers! And you can make a planning board!

Link Parties

Someday Crafts and Tatertots and Jello host probably the top link parties weekly. And I have found bloggers who shared some of their soirees and have even featured some.

I've been shopping this week! Online that is! I admit I like to shop. But. When you add a 2 year old boy to shopping well...it's more challenging and makes you just plain ole tired! And I'm talking about 'retail therapy', not 'let's get in a buggy and browse around' shopping. Thank goodness for the internet right?!

So with Christmas cash in the bank my first stop was Sephora...

Oh and if you were wondering my total purchase was $139.71, that's with tax and free shipping. How'd I do? And I needed new bras, got those yesterday...Lane Bryant is having buy 2 get 2 free. Which leaves me with enough money to buy some new tunes!! I might just have to pat myself on the back when all is said and done! ☺

Pumpkin Cheesecake Trifle

Happy Thursday! Since my husband is still on vacation (yay!) and we been having fun I don't have a tutorial today. Just wanted to share an easy, yummy recipe real quick! Remember my oven going out on me in the middle of Holiday Baking? Well Hunkie fixed it on Christmas Day! It's like new! But since we didn't get it fixed before Christmas Day I had to come up with a replacement for the pumpkin cheesecake my sister had requested back at Thanksgiving! So I whipped out my cell phone and Googled 'pumpkin cheesecake trifle' and found My Baking Addiction's Simple Pumpkin Cheesecake Trifles! I modified it a little bit since I was not doing individual servings and it turned out so yummy that it must be shared! ☺

Simple Pumpkin Cheesecake Trifles by My Baking Addiction

Ingredients

12 Biscoff Cookies, crushed into crumbs

1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted

8 ounces cream cheese, softened

1 cup pure pumpkin puree

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1/2 cup sugar

2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice

1 large tub (12 oz.) whipped topping (Cool Whip), thawed, divided

Instructions

1. In a medium bowl, combine Biscoff Cookie crumbs and butter. Divide the crumbs into the bottoms of your trifle glasses. Gently press crumbs to form an even layer of crust.

2. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, beat cream cheese until smooth. Add pumpkin, vanilla, sugar and pumpkin pie spice. Beat until well combined and creamy.

3. Use a spatula to fold in half of the whipped topping. Gently combine ingredients until no streaks remain.

4. To Assemble the Trifles: Pipe or spoon a layer of pumpkin cheesecake onto the Biscoff crust followed by a layer of whipped topping. Repeat layers until your trifle reaches the top of your glass or jar.

5. Store trifles in the refrigerator until ready to serve. If desired, garnish with Biscoff cookie crumbs.

My Modifications

I used ginger snaps in place of the Biscoff cookies. I used about 24 cookies and 2 tablespoons of butter and made 2 batches of crumbs/butter mixture. The first batch I pressed into the bottom of my bowl, the second batch I used for layering and for the top. So I layered 3 times....cheesecake, cool whip, crumbs on top of the bottom crumb layer. It tastes exactly like the real thing! And I love how easy it was!! To the favorite recipe file it goes!! Thanks My Baking Addiction!!

I have enough pumpkin puree left over that I think I'll experiment with my new Babycakes Cake Pop maker and make some pumpkin pound cake pops!! I'll let ya know how it goes!

I had a request to see the Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss in action. Because of leaving a little early to visit the in laws for Christmas you are getting the lipgloss action. However, I didn't put my usual makeup on nor did I have the usual hair done. This is somewhat of a natural me. ☺

I really like it! It's not overly sticky and I think it's a nice shade on myself!

I did try the Mythic Oil and it smells heavenly! And makes my hair soft, I don't think I've been getting enough out of the vile to see a difference in smoothness (which you can tell I need help with!). And I've been using the POREfessional and really like it too!

Holiday Baking

The Big Day is almost here! I must say this Christmas has had a whole different kind of fun to it since Lil' Hunkie is a little older. We've been reading about Baby Jesus, we've got Buddy the Elf here and he knows who Santa 'Caus' is. ☺ I'm actually not really caring about myself...shhhh..don't tell Hunkie!

I don't have the normal tutorial today just thought I'd share a little bit of one of my favorite Christmas traditions...baking. Things haven't quite gone smoothly this go round but ya gotta 'roll with the punches' sometimes! My normal procedure is to make sugar cookies and oatmeal raisin cookies (they are my pastor's favorite!) and then some goodies not requiring the oven like easy fudge. Well I got the oatmeal raisin cookies done but then 2 'pops' later and the baking element in my oven was not working! It broke in 2 places! And I planned on making cute tags for my containers with my new stamp from Pick Your Plum but it just didn't work out for me! I was proud of myself for not getting upset at these things and just making do!

I did experiment with my Babycakes Whoopie Pie maker and managed to not waste my sugar cookie dough and at least got to include those in my neighbor boxes! As my sister said "nice save"!!

I also made Peppermint Chocolate Marshmallows. Just dipped a marshmallow in white chocolate then in crushed up candy canes!

I made the ever so popular Saltine Toffee for our church's Ladies Christmas party. So easy and yummy!

Hunkie said it tastes like a Heath Bar and it really does! I followed Gallamore West's version, thanks Lori!

And earlier in the month I did get to make some sugar cookies for a friend, she was having her work party at her home. At least I got to make some this season!

We ordered a new baking element today and so I'm probably going to have to have a Plan B for cookies for Santa! And I also plan on making Santa Hat Party Mix to give to my siblings...thank goodness no oven is required!
